The Silent Force of Louis Couperus (2026)

This documentary offers a fresh look at Louis Couperus by tracing his novels, short stories, and letters. His upbringing in the Dutch East Indies and his later views on colonial society helped shape his writing, along with a lifelong sense of alienation and never truly belonging anywhere. In works such as The Silent Force and The Mountain of Light, he probed power, masculinity, and forbidden emotions while revealing little of himself. Why does his private life still spark controversy? The film brings new insight into Couperus and the era he lived in.
