Tokyo Above, 300 Meters (2026)
東京上空300メートル
This investigative documentary digs into the special privileges granted to the U.S. military in Japan, drawing on reporting by the Mainichi Shimbun. At its center are low-altitude helicopter flights by American forces over Tokyo, a flashpoint that leads the film to examine the Japan–U.S. Status of Forces Agreement, how criminal cases involving U.S. service members are handled, and the toll military bases take on local communities. With on-the-ground reporting from Tokyo, Yokota Air Base, and Okinawa, the documentary challenges accepted assumptions behind the U.S.–Japan alliance and asks who really holds authority over Japan’s airspace.
