Secret [Mis]communication System (2026)
Секретная система недопонимания
Director: Nikita Spiridonov
Drawing from the patent illustrations for US2292387, Secret Communication System, this film tells the story behind an ingenious wartime idea. As work on radio-controlled torpedoes advanced in the early 1940s, it became clear that an enemy could easily intercept the frequency used to guide them. In 1942, actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil proposed a clever fix: shifting the carrier frequency of both transmitter and receiver using a perforated paper tape like the rolls found in a player piano. Their invention merged musical logic with the machinery of war, capturing the modernist hope that art and technological progress could seamlessly inform one another.
