On January 4, 1890, political activist Jaša Tomić killed Miša Dimitrijević, a reporter for the newspaper The Wall (Branik), after Dimitrijević publicly shamed Tomić’s wife, Milica, several days earlier. Tomić was sentenced to seven years in prison for the crime. Outraged, ashamed, and marginalized, Milica joined forces with her newspaper The Flag (Zastava), determined to clear her name by improving the status and lives of women across the Austro-Hungarian regions of Vojvodina and Banat.
