Girraween: The Pilliga (2026)

For tens of thousands of years, the Gomeroi community has regarded the Girraween-Pilliga landscape as a living spiritual sanctuary where ancestral rituals, cultural continuity, and customary law have continuously nurtured First Nations identity. Today, that deeply sacred terrain confronts an industrial threat as Santos Energy advances plans for gasfield extraction and extensive pipeline networks directly through its core. Compounding the crisis, existing state heritage frameworks—answerable solely to one political appointee—are being leveraged to bypass Indigenous cultural protections. Refusing to surrender their ancestral legacy, distinguished educator and community leader Professor Ghillar Michael Anderson has initiated landmark litigation to defend First Nations sovereignty and safeguard this irreplaceable homeland.
