Ash Wednesday, the final day of Carnival, February 1976, Saint-Esprit, Martinique. After several years in mainland France through the BUMIDOM program, Liéna returns to her family—but her homecoming is shadowed by grief. Numb with sorrow, she sits in the back of the hearse bringing home her younger sister’s body from the mainland. Arriving at the family house makes the reunion painfully raw, and the mourning period ahead will lead Liéna to a heartbreaking realization.
