Returning to Berneray (2026)
Director Allen Moore first premiered The Shepherds of Berneray in 1981, delivering a rich examination of multi-generational farming practices alongside a vivid snapshot of a Gaelic-speaking population whose routines embody the region’s foundational history. Building on a forty-year rapport with the local residents, he initiated a fresh ten-year filming campaign in 2016 to track surviving cultural rituals and map how modern developments have altered daily routines across the remote community. By intercutting restored sixteen-millimeter footage shot during the late seventies with crisp modern digital recording, the latest release Returning to Berneray functions as an intimate visual diary that explores both the shifting environment and the deepening creative partnership between the director and the landscape that shaped him.
