Within the grand halls of UFRJ’s University Palace—once the infamous Pedro II Asylum—whispers of a buried history still linger. This was Brazil’s first psychiatric institution, where thousands of patients lived, suffered, and were all but forgotten. Now, by digging through preserved medical files and archival documents housed in the university’s Institute of Psychiatry, those shattered lives are being pieced back together, narrated through the haunting voice of a celebrated author who himself was confined within those very walls.
