At sixty-something, Edith has stopped looking at the world—because she’s terrified of what might look back. Every glance risks catching the monstrous figure lurking at the edge of her mind’s eye. To stay safe, she fixes her gaze on a bare, empty wall, where the hours dissolve into a haze of grief. There, in that stillness, she’s haunted not by the creature, but by the unbearable ghost of her daughter.
