Four Films about Music (Silent Jazz / Orchestra / Pause / Interior Music) (2026)

Most of my films begin with a single shot—often an instinctive reaction to something unfolding right in front of me. It’s the closest I come to improvisation, a musical quality I sometimes strive for but rarely achieve as a filmmaker. I captured the majority of the films in this program that way, using the mobile phone I always carry. I can usually sense right away that a situation might yield something, but it’s only when I review the footage on my computer that I uncover where the shots might lead. The third piece, *Pause*, did require some planning, yet even then, after the initial recording, I had to piece together fragments of sound and image through a long process of trial and error to see where they would take me. In *Interior Music*, I aimed the camera in direct response to music drifting from the Trinity Conservatoire in Greenwich. (EXiS — Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul, 2026)
