Shaping the Rough (2026)

Set within a historic wooden sculpture studio in Chiayi, Shaping the Rough chronicles the artistic journey of Xuan-Xuan, an eager apprentice training beside seasoned elder relatives. Initially viewing his mentors as flawless masters, the young carver soon uncovers quiet doubts and personal battles hidden behind their expert techniques. Through the rhythmic strike of chisels and the slow emergence of divine figures from raw timber, a deeper family bond takes shape. Blending traditional craftsmanship with intimate character study, the film explores how shared labor bridges generational gaps, ultimately revealing that true mastery lies not in finishing touches, but in embracing the continuous, imperfect journey of becoming.
