In the remote corners of western Nepal, an ancient and deeply rooted tradition continues to cast a long shadow over the lives of women and girls. Known as Chaupadi Pratha, this practice forces those who are menstruating or recovering from childbirth into exile—banished from their own homes to spend their days and nights in cramped, isolated shelters, often shared with livestock. While the custom has faded in many regions, it stubbornly persists in a handful of villages, where the silence of tradition still drowns out the cries for dignity and change.
