Back in 2005, when I was just 20 years old, I held my very first DV camera in my hands. At the time, I was chasing a big, ambitious dream—to become a film director. When I wasn’t busy shooting short films, I would occasionally turn the lens on the two matriarchs of my family: my maternal grandmother and my paternal grandmother. They were both well along in years, and honestly, I just wanted to preserve some memories on video for my future kids to one day see. Over the years, I shot countless short films and scribbled out dozens of screenplays, but none of them ever really took off. My maternal grandmother passed away in 2018, and my paternal grandmother followed in 2020. That stretch of time also saw my filmmaking dreams completely fall apart. Then, one day, while looking at my own child, it hit me: those simple, everyday recordings I’d made were probably the most valuable footage I’d ever captured. That’s when I decided to take all those years of archived clips and shape them into a full-length feature film.
