In a Ukrainian orphanage called Svitlyachok in the year 2000, eight-year-old Kairo and twelve-year-old Stanislas forge an unbreakable bond through their daily rituals and tiny escapades. When Kairo swipes a chocolate bar for his best friend, he gets stuck under the principal’s desk—and from that hiding spot, he helplessly watches as Stanislas is taken away by an adoptive family.
