Danse Macabre is a five-minute animated nightmare about war and destruction. Inspired by the second movement of Dmitri Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony, the film transforms the music into a dark procession of apocalyptic imagery.
Hisko Hulsing creates the short as a fusion of hand-drawn and computer animation, using movement, rhythm and visual symbolism instead of conventional dialogue. The result is an abstract anti-war work that compresses an enormous subject into a very brief running time.
Danse Macabre is a festival short, so online availability is more limited than that of conventional feature films.
