能樂師的女兒
Director: Cheuk Cheung
Cast: Hikaru Uzawa, Hisa Uzawa
The Path of Soul is a Japanese documentary about Noh theater and the complicated relationship between tradition, gender, and identity. At its center is Hikaru, a third-generation Noh actor who seeks to reconcile her own artistic identity with a centuries-old performance tradition in which the stage has historically been reserved for male bodies.
Director Cheung Cheuk follows Hikaru as she considers both the legacy passed down through her family and the expectations attached to that legacy. The documentary uses performance, rehearsal, family history, and intimate observation to explore questions of inheritance, gender expression, and the relationship between body and soul.
The Path of Soul has a festival and documentary release profile, with wider streaming dependent on territory and distributor.
