More About This Film

Carmen, also known as Carmen, l'oiseau rebelle or Viva Carmen!, is a French animated musical drama inspired by Georges Bizet's famous opera and Prosper Mérimée's original story. Set in Seville in 1840, the film follows 13-year-old Salva as he meets Carmen, a charismatic young woman whose fate appears to be threatened by a troubling omen.

Rather than presenting a conventional retelling of the opera, the film places Carmen's story in the hands of Salva and a group of street children who decide to help her. Director Sébastien Laudenbach combines hand-crafted visual storytelling with music and a family-oriented adventure structure while retaining the emotional themes associated with the classic work.

  • Sébastien Laudenbach directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Santiago Otheguy.
  • The voice cast includes Camélia Jordana, Milo Machado-Graner, Soumaye Bocoum, and Carl Malapa.
  • The film was produced by Folivari with France 3 Cinéma and other partners.
  • It had its world premiere in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight in 2026 and was also selected for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
  • The film is scheduled for theatrical release in France on December 16, 2026.
