From the late 1800s through the early 1900s, a wave of European capital—British, Belgian, Polish, German, and French—transformed the Ukrainian heartland, forging industrial powerhouses like Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Kamianske. These cities were not just built; they were sculpted by foreign entrepreneurs who poured money and expertise into steel, mining, and machinery. Yet, the Soviet regime systematically scrubbed away these Western fingerprints, rewriting history to erase the cosmopolitan roots of the region. Today, as Russia’s war grinds on for control of these very territories, a dedicated coalition of historians and grassroots activists is racing against time to unearth, document, and protect the fading architectural and cultural imprints of that lost European era—before they vanish forever under bombardment or bureaucratic neglect.
