The Whale and the Musician (2026)

The Whale and the Musician, also presented as The Musician and the Whale, is a documentary built around an unusual artistic experiment. French electronic musician Rone becomes interested in the apparent attraction between his music and whales and sets out on a journey to meet a humpback whale in its natural environment.

The film combines ocean observation with music-making, following the artist as he works with sailors, scientists, environmental researchers, and bioacoustics specialists. Its central question is whether human-made sound can create a meaningful encounter across species.

• The film is directed by Valentin Paoli.
• Rone, whose real name is Erwan Castex, is the central musician and subject.
• Filming took place around Réunion Island, Brittany, and Paris.
• Rone created a 15-track soundtrack inspired by the documentary.
• The documentary was presented as a 2026 work at the See the Sound festival in Germany.
