Driven by the chilling warnings in the civil defense booklet *Om kriget kommer* (If War Comes), farmworker Karl-Göran Persson sets out to reinforce his home. Over the years, he scavenges scrap metal and steadily morphs the simple house into a hardened bunker, designed to shelter himself and his neighbors from an impending enemy assault. But as the work drags on, the line between tangible reality and the looming specter of catastrophe begins to blur—and what starts as a precaution spirals into an all-consuming fixation for the isolated Karl-Göran.

More About This Film

Redoubt, originally titled Värn, is a Swedish drama from filmmaker John Skoog. The story is set during the height of the Cold War and follows farm worker Karl-Göran Persson as he increasingly devotes himself to fortifying his home against a possible future attack.

His construction project becomes both a practical effort and an expression of anxiety, bringing him into conflict with the rhythms of ordinary rural life. The film observes the contrast between one man's fixation and the reactions of people around him, using a restrained visual style to explore fear and uncertainty.

Denis Lavant leads the cast, while the film's black-and-white imagery gives its rural landscapes and homemade fortress an austere, distinctive appearance.
